The explosion of a star, or supernova, is one of the most extreme events in the universe, responsible for creating the heavy elements essential for life. The resulting fast moving shock wave, the supernova remnant, is responsible for creating super high-energy particles called cosmic rays. These find their way to our solar system and can interfere with electronic equipment and be hazardous to people, particularly people flying in aircraft or living in space. This research investigates the magnetic fields of supernova remnants and our Galaxy, which are crucial to understanding the extreme processes that produce these high energy particles.
