This video displays the cartesian coordinates notation for the gradient of a scalar and a vector functions. It is shown that the gradient of a vector is a second order tensor and can be represented as a matrix. It is emphasized that the gradient of “n” order tensor yields an “n+1” order tensor.

We can use indices to write matrix multiplication in a more compact way.
